SUMMARY:Lull: the monk from Malmesbury who converted Germany
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Tony McAleavy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLull is one of the most remarkable individuals produced by Malmesbury Abbey. \n\n\n\nHe was a member of the religious community in the 720s and early 730s a few years after the death of Aldhelm. He went on pilgrimage to Rome where he joined forces with another Englishman\, St Boniface\, and with him set off to undertake missionary work among the pagan Germans. \n\n\n\nAfter the death of Boniface\, Lull became the leader of the new Church in Germany and the adviser to Emperor Charlemagne. Lull founded a monastery at Hersfeld in Hesse where he was buried. \n\n\n\nTony will tell the extraordinary story of his journey from Malmesbury to Hersfeld.

SUMMARY:Malmesbury and Alfred the Great (Talk only)
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Tony McAleavy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMalmesbury is closely associated with Athelstan but it had strong links also with Athelstan’s illustrious grandfather\, King Alfred the Great. \n\n\n\nTony will explore the impact of Alfred on the town which he established as one of his strategically important fortified ‘burhs’ as part of his campaign against the Danes. The street plan of the historic town centre was laid out by Alfred. \n\n\n\nTony will also investigate the tense relationship between Alfred and the Malmesbury religious community and how he took land from the Church to reward his warriors.

SUMMARY:Retracing Saxon Footsteps: Exercise Shallow Grave
DESCRIPTION:An astonishing story of the discovery of an extensive 7th Century burial site\, right on our doorstep! \n\n\n\nA talk by archaeologist Richard Osgood. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRichard first gave a Wessex Week talk on this fascinating discovery in 2023 and is back to provide an update on the dig\, which is happening right now! \n\n\n\nGloucestershire in the 7th Century was a ‘liminal zone‘: true frontier land. Traces of this age are limited and yet a Cotswold field has recently yielded some very important finds\, evidence for a settlement which has associated burials – one of which was provided with a series of impressive grave goods. Located by a metal detectorist\, the site was investigated further by Gloucestershire Council and then by participants on the Operation Nightingale programme using archaeology to assist the recovery of military veterans. Hence\, Exercise ‘Shallow Grave’ was formed. This talk will explore the site in the Cotswolds and then draw in recent parallels from other sites in Wessex – on the chalklands of the military training area of Salisbury Plain. \n\n\n\n(Rumour has it that Time Team may be involved – but our friends at Cotswold Archaeology are certainly on the case)
