Wessex Week and Grants to organisations 2023-2024

Wessex Week has had another successful year in 2024; with events that have been sold out to enthusiastic attendees, many volunteer hours, and generous speakers, this has been another year when the event has made a profit.

Over the last few years the Wessex Week Organisers have  supported local archaeological initiatives such as Operation Nightingale and the Shallow Grave Dig, the Big Dig for Athelstan 1100 in Malmesbury, the Athelstan museum’s 1100 exhibition, and also Flying Monk Community Radio.

The profit from this year will support not only, Operation Nightingale and Flying Monk Radio, but an archaeological exploration of the Bird Cage walk prior to an application by the ‘Aethelstan, First King of all England, Trust’,  for planning permission for the Athelstan Statue.

We are proud to be able to continue to support local initiatives while providing an exciting Wessex Week programme.

The preparations for another interesting and exciting programme for 2025 are underway and we hope to see you then, keep the date: October 18th – 26th 2025.

Athelstan 1100

Athelstan, who is buried at Malmesbury, is recognised as the first King of England and one of “the greatest Anglo-Saxon Kings”.

He succeeded his father, Edward the Elder, as King of the Anglo-Saxons in 924, and Wessex Week 2024 will mark the 1100th anniversary of this momentous event.

In addition to Wessex Week 2024, a full program of Athelstan events was held throughout May, June, and July. Full details can be found on the Athelstan 1100 website.
